Either it fits, in which case you've blown the first note of your solo, or it doesn't, in which case you just modulate a half-step to make it fit - then go from there. A single toot ain't gonna stop no show, and one of two things will happen. Your ear already KNOWS what's going on, and the most "noodling" you should need to do is one note. I don't mean that metaphorically - I'm talking about the actual neuroscience here. In fact, you are using the wrong portion of your brain if you're constantly thinking about the letter names and notes. I got used to it quickly, especially after I turned my back on using charts. Also thought about making my mic rig such that I can switch off the mic so I can play somewhat to myself as I determine key by ear, then flipping on mic once I've got it.Ĭlick to expand.I've spent the last 50 years improvising onstage, with a mic, and with zero warning about keys, etc. Has anyone been in this spot? Any software/apps/tools that can reasonably give me a starting point for key? The DJ did tell me that he uses the Camelot system for his mixing, so one idea I had was for me to somehow rig a screenshare device so I can at least look at what he's looking at.

Yesterday I experimented with a phone app called Song Key Finder that does a reasonable job of at least giving me an initial note that won't be blatantly wrong, but the app is a bit glitchy and isn't super accurate. I would theoretically be in a position where my horn is miced, I have no idea what's up next, and I therefore can't take a few moments to determine song key by ear for each song without broadcasting my noodling to the audience while I determine key. It sounds like he improvises his set and has such a range of material that he can't or won't give me a song list so I can spent the time on my own at least writing down the key of each song beforehand (plus I've yet to find out if he tempo/pitch shifts the songs). Good morning folks! I'm communicating with a wedding DJ that wants to maybe start adding live improv sax to his DJ sets.
